Where can I learn more about Killies?

If you have questions regarding killies, don't ask me. For truth be told, I'm a beginner too.

A good place to start learning about the fish is to visit the AKA (American Killifish Association) website and read the online beginners' guide at "http://www.aka.org/AKA/beginner/begin.htm".

You can also learn a lot about the fish by subscribing to "Killietalk Digest", a mailing list where many experienced and serious hobbyists hang out. To subscribe to "Killietalk", go to "http://fins.actwin.com/killietalk/". The good folks on "Killietalk" are some of the most helpful people around and you will be surprised and gratified, as I was, by the depth and sincerity of their answers.

Bu take note that there's a certain netiquette involved if you want to post questions to "Killietalk". Always read the archives first. Chances are the question you are dying to ask has been asked many times before. If you want people to help you with your question, describe exactly what you were doing. For instance, no one would be able to help you if you simply ask "Why are my Nothos not laying eggs?". It's not that the question is dumb but rather it was asked dumbly. Before people can answer your question, you have to give them the details, like how many fish were used in the breeding tank, the ratio of male to females, the size of the tank, what breeding bowl were you using, the temperature and Ph of the water, what were you feeding the fish with, and so on. The more details you provide, the better others will be able to help you. Take note too that the experts on "Killietalk" are mostly Americans and they measure things in the Imperial system. Convert centigrade to fahrenheit, centimetres to inches and litres to US gallons before giving them the details or they won't know what you are talking about. Humour them. Americans may be very advanced in many areas but they are really primitive when it comes to measurements.

Although it isn't in the rules, it helps if you do not post your question anonymously. Remember that when you ask a question, you are also, in effect, asking for a favour. No one owes you anything so it's rude not to reveal who you are when you are seeking help. I myself will never respond to an email that is posted anonymously or under a pseudonym.

Happy fishkeeping!!
